CPM Calculator: Calculate Cost Per 1,000 Impressions

Use this free CPM calculator to compare the cost of any advertising placement.

What is CPM?

CPM stands for cost per mille, meaning the cost to deliver 1,000 advertising impressions. Advertisers use CPM to compare the relative cost of media placements across channels, publishers, and campaigns.

A lower CPM is not automatically better. The value of a placement also depends on audience relevance, ad position, creative quality, and whether the campaign reaches people who can take the desired next action.

CPM formula

To calculate CPM, divide your total advertising cost by total impressions, then multiply the result by 1,000.

[ \text{CPM} = \frac{\text{Campaign cost}}{\text{Impressions}} \times 1{,}000 ]

For example, a $1,500 campaign that receives 30,000 impressions has a CPM of $50.

[ \frac{1{,}500}{30{,}000} \times 1{,}000 = 50 ]

How to use CPM to compare advertising placements

Use CPM as a consistent comparison metric when you are reviewing similar types of advertising placements. Before choosing the lowest CPM, compare:

  • The audience you will reach

  • How impressions are defined and measured

  • The position and format of the ad

  • The expected campaign outcome

  • The quality of available reporting

  • The ability to track qualified traffic and conversions

A higher CPM can be reasonable when a placement reaches a concentrated group of high-value buyers. A lower CPM can be wasteful if the audience has little connection to your product.

CPM for newsletter sponsorships

Newsletter sponsorships are often purchased as flat-fee placements. Use the calculator above to estimate an effective CPM from the sponsorship cost and the publisher’s available impression data.

When comparing newsletter sponsorships, make sure you understand whether the reported number represents total subscribers, emails delivered, or average opens. These measures are not interchangeable.
